Do you plan to study in Europe as an international student? If so, there’s a good chance you’ll be eligible for a scholarship. You have many options if you are interested in studying for a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or doctoral degree. Please review the list below for the country you plan to apply to.

With the Erasmus+ initiative, the European Commission provides funding to students from all over the world who wish to study in Europe. Check their official scholarships page for details on the available programs.


Grants.at provides a searchable database of research grants and scholarships to study abroad in Austria.

A second official database can be found at Scholarships.at.


Danish students usually receive a government grant (SU, Statens Uddannelsesstøtte), and in some cases SU is also available as a scholarship to excellent international students. More information can be found at StudyinDenmark.dk.

Danish universities such as Aalborg University and Roskilde University offer their own scholarships and tuition fee waivers. For more information, contact the university admissions office.

Finnish universities now charge up to 20,000 euros per year in tuition for non-European students.

New scholarships were introduced to support gifted students from outside the EU/EEA. You apply for a scholarship for studying in Finland at the same time you apply for a degree programme. Scholarship applications are handled directly by the university. Apply early and prepare your application carefully as there are only a limited number of resources available.

France introduced higher tuition fees for international students in autumn 2019 while students from the EEA can almost study for free. (Read our guide about university tuition fees in France.) You may need financial aid to cover tuition or living expenses.

CampusBourses, an official government-run website, lists more than 250 grants for students. You can filter by subject area and nationality to see if you qualify.

Many French institutions offer scholarships or tuition fee waivers to gifted students. Check with their international offices before applying.

In Germany, public universities are tuition-free, but you may need a scholarship to cover your living expenses. There are more than 200 scholarships listed in the scholarship database of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Details about the requirements and how to apply are included in the listings.


There are hundreds of scholarships available for students who want to study in Ireland. A variety of institutions award them, including the Government of Ireland, Irish universities, and other institutions. In addition, the Irish Universities Association has published a list of grants and scholarships.


Lithuania offers a number of scholarships for international students enrolled in full-time Master degree programs. You must apply by May in the year you begin your studies in Lithuania if you are a citizen of a non-European country. Check out their official website for more information.


With Grantfinder, you can find numerous scholarships to study in Holland. You can filter results by academic level, subject, and nationality.


Sweden is a very popular country for international students, but tuition can be quite expensive: between 10,000 and 20,000 euros per year, plus a relatively high cost of living.

Scholarships are available through the Swedish Institute, often tailored to your region or country of origin. Check their website for details.

Scholarships provided by universities directly, administered by their admissions offices, are also available. Again, the Swedish Institute provides a list of these scholarships.

United Kingdom

It is one of the most expensive countries in the world to study abroad because of the UK’s high tuition fees. There are also countless scholarship opportunities to study in the UK, which makes it easier for talented students to pursue their degrees. For more information, contact the British Council.
