Tuition and living expenses are the only expenses covered by the Foundation. AKF scholarships do not cover travel costs. PhD students receive funding for their first two years of study, after which they are expected to find other sources of assistance.
An annual service charge of 5% is imposed on the scholarship amount, which is considered a loan. The loan agreement must be co-signed by a guarantor. Payback begins six months after the end of the study period funded by the Aga Khan Foundation.
Nationals of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar, and Mozambique can apply to the Foundation. Applicants from France, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada who are originally from one of the above developing countries, are interested in development-related studies, and have no other means of financing their education are accepted.
Applications are only accepted from nationals listed above who reside in one of the countries where Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), Aga Khan Education Services (AKES), or Aga Khan Education Board (AKEB) offices process applications and interview candidates.
Students under the age of 30 are given preference.
As of January 1st of each year, students can obtain application forms from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services/Boards in the countries where they reside.
Applications should be returned to the agency that provided the form. Do not send them to Geneva. In some countries, application deadlines may be earlier, so it is advisable to submit your application by 31 March. It is recommended that applicants contact their local offices for information regarding internal deadline dates and requirements since these may vary by country.
