Gates Scholarship Amount and Value
Gates Cambridge Scholarship for International Students covers all expenses associated with studying at Cambridge. Additionally, it provides discretionary funding. The following costs are covered:
- Fee for University Compositions at the appropriate rate
- Maintenance Allowance for a Single Student (£17,500 for 12 months at the rate for 2021-22; prorata for courses less than 12 months) – for PhD scholars, the award is for up to 4 years
- One Economy Round-Trip Airline Ticket at the beginning and at the end of the course.
- The cost of inbound visas and immigration health surcharges
- For attending conferences and courses, you can receive funding of up to £2,000, depending on the length of your course.
- Family Allowance: Up to £10,120 for the first child and up to £4,320 for the second child (2020-21 rate). A partner does not receive funding.
- You can apply to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork for your Ph.D. (other fieldwork costs should be covered by the University Composition Fee).
- Maternity/Paternity Funding: If you need it, you can apply to interrupt your studies for up to six months and still receive your maintenance allowance during this period.
- Hardship funding: To help with unforeseen difficulties.
How Many Scholarships will be provided by Bill and Melinda Gates?
The University of Cambridge awards approximately 90 scholarships to international students and US citizens each year. For the US round, approximately 25 awards will be presented, and for the international round, approximately 55 awards will be presented.

Who can apply for the Gates Scholarship? Apply for a Bill Gates Scholarship For International Students if you are:
- Citizens of any country outside the United Kingdom.
- You can apply to study one of the following full-time residential courses at the University of Cambridge:
