The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) provides grants to foreign citizens not residing in Italy and to Italian citizens abroad (IRE)* for the academic year 2022-2023 in order to promote international cultural and scientific cooperation, to promote the Italian language and culture and to support Italy’s economic system in the world (According to Law 288/55 and its subsequent amendments).
Students can apply for grants to pursue study, training, and/or research programs at Italian Higher Education Institutes, both public and legally recognized.

Depending on the policy of the university, grantees may be exempt from paying enrollment and tuition fees. Italian language and culture courses require enrollment fees, for which exemptions are not granted.
Health and Medical Insurance
MAECI will provide health and accident insurance coverage to grantees during the entire grant period. A pre-existing physical or pathological condition will not be covered by insurance.
In addition, recipients will receive a monthly allowance of 900 Euros on a quarterly basis, which will be deposited into their Italian bank accounts.
Depending on the type of course, the scholarship can last for six or nine months. Applicants must demonstrate satisfactory academic progress before they are eligible for renewal.
Foreign students not residing in Italy and Italian citizens living abroad (IRE)* must submit applications if they have the academic qualifications required to enroll in an Italian university/institute. See this link for more information.
The applicant should not have reached the age of 28 and 364 days by the deadline for Master’s Degree/Higher Education in Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) Programmes/Italian Language and Culture Courses. Renewal applications are the only exception.
Ph.D. applicants cannot have reached the age of 30 years and 364 days by the deadline, with the sole exception of renewals.
For research Projects under academic supervision applicants should not be over 40 and 364 days old by the deadline.
Language skills and proficiency
The applicant must present a certificate of proficiency in Italian before enrolling in an Italian-taught course. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), B2 is the minimum level required. It is possible for candidates who took an Italian course at the university to submit a language certificate issued by a language teacher at the University.
English-taught courses require applicants to present a certificate proving their English language proficiency. Within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), B2 is the minimum level required. If you are applying for a course taught entirely in English and are from an English-speaking country, your certification may be accepted. Proof of proficiency in Italian is not required for courses entirely taught in English.
Italian language proficiency certificates are required for applicants enrolling in Italian language and culture courses. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the minimum level is A2.
The PhD program and Research under academic supervision do not require proof of language proficiency.
